INTERVIEW WITH FIT MOM NAIMA

Gym fanatic 

Have you always been fit? What inspired you to live this lifestyle?

Naima: No, I haven’t always been fit; in fact, I was the opposite of fit. It all started after I got engaged back in 2008. I was never huge but I was 10-15 pounds heavier for my age and height. So, it all started with a simple plan, a plan to get rid of some weight so I could look nice for my wedding. This was my motivation. I began attending one of the local gyms. I found out that I was so out of shape even walking one mile was not easy, but I kept at it. I also started going to the park with friends. The first day of my walk at the park was tough; I couldn’t believe how out of shape I was at such a young age. This was the start of my journey to get healthy.

What advice do you have for moms who declare they don’t have time for gym and exercises?

Naima: I truly believe one can find the time to do anything, as long as they are hungry for it. I know nothing worthwhile ever comes easy. One doesn’t need to go to the gym to workout, we live in the age of social media, which is the ultimate resource for anyone seeking motivation and dedication on staying fit. Also, you don’t have to go to the gym, but, for me that’s what I like. I like going to the gym because they have many group exercises and they also have kids club, your kids can play while you work out, it’s win-win situation for me. My advice for mothers is, start slow and continue from there. I would start by just going out for walks, using DVDs or YouTube videos at home, then see how that makes you feel.

What type of exercise do you not enjoy the most?

Naima: I have many lol, but the two I would pick are burpees and triceps push ups, these particular exercises have the tendency to make me want to cry lol, but I make sure to include them in my workouts. They are very effective.

What special snacks do you enjoy?

Naima: I love dates, plain yogurt with honey and I just discovered larabars, so I love those as well, and they’re wholesome with only 2-3 ingredients so I love them.

How has your workouts changed since you had kids?

Naima: I think they’ve gotten hardcore actually lol, maybe because I’ve been working out quite a while. I feel a lot stronger and happier now. I still have to work hard to achieve certain goal though, as we age and have more kids, I believe our bodies don’t respond to exercise, as we would like.

What do you do more cardio or strength training?

Naima: I love both equally, but if I had to pick one over the other it would be lifting, it’s amazing how much we can lift ones we start training.

How do you motivate yourself to workout?

Naima: For me, I feel more productive when I exercise, however, there are days when I feel like just sleeping in and doing nothing. I guess knowing there are people that will babysit your kids for 2 hours really helps, I love my free time from kids. All moms need this. Its my ME time, so this helps a lot.

If you could give one advice to people who want to change their life to become more healthier and fit, what would it be?

Naima: Believe in yourself and stop making excuses. I love this quote from Eric Thomas, it sums up everything.

“When you want to succeed as bad as you want to breathe, then you’ll be successful.”
