Interview with Haya Alsharhan

Haya Alsharhan gives us the scoop on crossFit training. We are very lucky to have her here and share some tips and advice on how to pursue CrossFit training. Don’t worry if you are not into high intensity workout, this post will also be beneficial to you because Haya also covers facts about calorie-intake and activity level. Welcome Haya!

CrossFit is a fitness regimen developed by Greg Glassman over several decades.CrossFit is constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity. All CrossFit workouts are based on functional movements, and these movements reflect the best aspects of gymnastics, weightlifting, running, rowing and more. They move the largest loads the longest distances, so they are ideal for maximizing the amount of work done in the shortest time. Intensity is essential for results and is measurable as work divided by time—or power. The more work you do in less time, or the higher the power output, the more intense the effort. (crossfit.com)

What made you decide to pursue CrossFit? 

I decided to pursue CrossFit ,in all honesty, I was bored and wanted a challenge. Once I tried it I instantly fell in love with it.

How challenging is CrossFit?  

CrossFit is challenging but in a good way! The only way to improve in anything in life is to be faced with a challenge and crossFit is no different. Understand that it’s hard but getting fit is a journey worth pursuing. Crossfit classes are usually 1 hour long. Training as a competitive crossfit athlete requires more than that. It’s very challenging to train and aim high as a competitive crossfit athlete. It requires many sacrifices and to be dedicated to training. I used to train twice a day but with coaching and taking care of my family and daughter I train once a day. I don’t worry too much about my training because all I have to do is give my best every training session, other than that, I completely trust and depend on my coach who is my husband @q8trainer. He programs all my training sessions. Every accomplishment I made as an athlete, I give credit to him.

How can you introduce someone to CrossFit?

I would suggest finding a good CrossFit gym and to try a class. That’s the best way to experience it.

What can someone look in a good CrossFit facility?                     

Research about the trainers, their experiences, credentials, ask the members of the gym of their experiences. You want to make sure that the trainer understands what they’re coaching and knows how to deal with different clients according to their ability level. It doesn’t matter what fitness level you are at, CrossFit is made for everyone and can be scaled down to suit your ability.

How are proper nutrition and level of activity related?

Nutrition and level of activity are directly related, you have to pay attention to both in order to reach you goal.The most important thing is to eat. In some ways nutrition is more important than exercise! It plays a big role in many things such as body composition, energy levels, sleep, and performance.

The basic idea is…according to your bodyweight and activity level (how many hours of exercise you get) you can determine how many calories you should be consuming in a day.

For example, if your goal is to lose weight than you need to eat less calories and if you want to gain weight eat more. But nutrition is much more complex than that. A good place to start is to start tracking your food and energy levels and adjust from there.

What is the difference between personal trainers and CrossFit trainers?

To be considered a CrossFit trainer, you have to (at least) have a CrossFit Level 1 certificate. The CrossFit Level 1 certificate is a 2 day seminar. Anyone can attend the course and study for it. That’s why it’s important to do some research on the crossFit trainer you will be with. Someone with no experience of training people can still be a “CrossFit trainer.”

What is your favorite workout?

I don’t have a favorite workout but anything with heavy weights is always fun. For example, “Grace” it’s 30 clean & jerks for time at 95 lbs.

What are some beginner CrossFit workouts that people can try?

There are many sites online that provide at home CrossFit workouts and some don’t need any equipments! I always suggest a simple body weight workout to get you started. Something that includes squats, burpees and pull-ups!

What is one fact that most people don’t know about you?

I didn’t play any sports before CrossFit!
